You’re talking about boomer parents. Save your breathe and energy. They won’t listen and you’ll gain nothing

I always apologize (because I’m imperfect and sometimes I get snappy). One day he snapped at me, and I knew he was just tired, so I didn’t say anything. He came downstairs a few minutes later and said “mom I’m sorry, I’m tired, but that isn’t a good reason to get snappy with you, I’ll try not to do that”. THAT’S why. That’s why we break the cycles. Because he’s 13, and has more emotional maturity than many adults.

I think most parents do their best. The problem is we don’t know how we’re screwing up until it’s brought up to us later on in life, and it’s how we deal with it and grow from it that decides whether our kids can stay with us or move on

So many people just need to hear the words "I'm sorry" from their parents and won't. I know mine won't. I did the best I could raising my son as a young single parent. And when he confronted me with something I did years ago, letting me know it really hurt him, the only proper response was for me to apologize for not making the best choice at that time. I'm so thankful every day, we have a great relationship. And I will do what I can to maintain that.

It’s the accountability thing. All people are flawed but if someone says “I’m sorry I messed up, how can I make it right?” That’s everything.

Same! It’s not easy being a cycle breaker, but it’s so fulfilling to see how safe and wise our children are growing up

THIS is what I think "gentle parenting" is. it isn't letting the kids run around with no supervision or boundaries, it's treating them like you're teaching them how to be an adult from the beginning. treating them with respect while helping them navigate their world. side note, I can't get over how much you look like Famke Janssen to me.

i’m currently pregnant for the first time and really struggling with thoughts that i’ll end up becoming just like my own awful mother and that my kid might hate me as much as i hate her one day, and this video was so reassuring and healing to watch. thank you ❤️

My mom never listened whenever I opened up how much she hurt me or about anything that bothers me. I have never heard her say sorry.

It Wasn't That Bad :
whenever my 5yo would say "mum, I'm hungry" I would always respond "oh, hi hungry, I'm Mum" (and then get her a snack). Up until a few months ago when I said it and she said "mum, I don't like it when you say hi hungry" to which I responded "oh, thank you for telling me that, I didn't know that you didn't like it, I was just being silly but I won't say that anymore" and I haven't said it since. it's THAT easy to validate your kid and treat them with respect. I know I would have been told I was too sensitive and couldn't take a joke 🤷🏼‍♀️

This is how I raised my kids. They listened better when I explained the reasoning behind what I was asking of them. They're now secure adults.

Toxic narcissistic parenting is so weird. It’s like they berate you as a child when they feel like they’re in a position of power and then when theyre old and lonely they’re so confused why you don’t answer the phone respect your kids they’re children so they want a relationship with you when they’re adults.

And employers wonder why people don’t keep a job that’s traumatic. Younger generations don’t “just deal with it.”
