@txtrails: Austin’s Wild Parrots! These monk parakeets are native to South America, but escaped or released pets established a population here decades ago. This colony is along the Lady Bird Lake Trail near the Waller Creek Boathouse and the Confluence. #TXTrails #AustinTexas #LadyBirdLake
Fun fact they are not native! A guy let his free near zilker park years ago and they ended up thriving! They would cover the tree at my middle school O’henry. They were so cute!

I used to see them off Airport Blvd. Ive been told that they escaped from Tomlinson's back when they sold exotic birds. I had to Google it just now to find out the details

So from what I was told by dad in the early 90s and early 00s pet store around Austin where broken into and all sorts of animals were released by animal groups. These monk parrots seemed to thrive all over central Texas area

I’ve seen a few of them in the parking lot at the Walmart at Ben White and 35. I always stop just to watch them for a little bit. 🥰

Prime location, rent free, no bills, no property taxes. I would like to know if they have a little space for me. Austin Tx is expensive.

I live in Austin have a murder of crows. And 6 monk parakeets that visit me daily. For fresh water and food. They fight so they have schedules after a big to do not too long ago 💚💚

Wow, I used to get them on my birdfeeder in South Austin - one day seven at a time. I’ve never seen a nest though. It’s huge, like they have a whole condominium complex. I did not know they were so communal.

And this is why this particular species is illegal to own in California. They thrive in warm climates and over populate. But darn it are they CUTE! There's a colony over in Corpus too

Oh, thank goodness for this post. 😭 I saw two of them in the grass on my way to work one day and was heartbroken thinking they were escaped pets. I stopped in hopes of helping but they flew off before I could call someone and I couldn’t see where they’d gone. I had no idea they were wild, but I’m glad they were okay! This was a year or two ago now but it’s reassuring in retrospect.
