Some U.S. concerns were legitimate. Some compromises were possible. And walking away has a very real price for Canadian businesses, workers and consumers. But there’s another price we have to calculate: What would Canada have given up by saying YES? Because this trade fight may have exposed something much bigger than tariffs. For decades, Canada believed deeper economic integration with the United States made both countries stronger and more secure. But integration can also create dependence. And dependence creates leverage. So maybe the question isn’t whether Canada should stop trading with the United States. That would be ridiculous. Maybe it’s whether Canada can build enough alternatives that the next time Washington demands something Canada doesn’t want to give… we can actually afford to say no.
