You lay the track once: a customer pays in Stripe → QuickBooks records the sale → Gmail sends the receipt → Slack tells the team. It follows the same stops every time. It's cheap, fast and predictable, but it can't read. (Zapier, Make and n8n build these.) An AI step inside an automation is a brain at the switch. The AI reads each email and routes it: refund → Stripe, new lead → CRM, angry customer → a human. Everything else stays on rails. That's still a workflow, and it's where most businesses get the real wins. An agent is a taxi. It gets a destination instead of a route. "Dana was charged twice. Find out why and fix it." It checks Stripe, searches Gmail, reads your refund policy, and decides → acts → looks → decides again until it's done. It's powerful, but slower, costs more per run, and sometimes takes a wrong turn. Guardrails for every agent: A short list of roads: only the tools the job needs. A fuel limit: max steps (n8n's Max Iterations). A dispatcher: anything with money or customers waits for your Approve in Slack. The rule: if you can draw the flowchart, build the train.
