@beaconpostpartum: I’m 6 weeks postpartum. Yesterday my husband came home and asked what I did all day. And before anyone comes for him 😂 he wasn’t trying to be rude. It wasn’t an accusation. He genuinely asked. But something about the question hit me wrong. Because I looked around the house and honestly couldn’t point to much. There were bottles on the counter. Laundry sitting exactly where I’d left it that morning. The dishwasher hadn’t been emptied. I hadn’t showered. I was wearing the same leggings I’d slept in. And when I thought about what I had actually “accomplished” that day, the answer felt embarrassingly small. The baby had slept maybe 40 minutes total unless she was touching me. That was basically my entire day. Feed her. Burp her. Change her. Rock her. Get her asleep. Slowly lower her into the bassinet like I’m defusing a bomb. Her eyes open. Pick her back up. Repeat. 😵💫 At some point I realized it was almost 3pm and I hadn’t eaten lunch. I reheated my coffee twice and still never finished it. I started a load of laundry and forgot about it. I answered half a text. I think I brushed my teeth? So later that night, after everyone was asleep, I opened this app and typed: “6 weeks. He came home and asked what I did all day. I couldn’t think of 1 thing. I kept a human alive on 40 min of sleep.” I wasn’t really looking for advice. I just needed to put it somewhere because I felt ridiculous admitting how much that question bothered me. Then a mom from Ohio replied. She said: “Mina asked why the dishwasher wasn’t run. I was STILL wearing the same shirt from the night before but now with milk stains. U aren’t alone” And I just stared at it. Same shirt. Milk stains. Dishwasher not done. Different house. Different mom. Same exact feeling. I replied, “Need this thank you.” Because I did. I needed somebody to remind me that maybe the problem wasn’t that I had done “nothing.” Maybe the problem was that almost everything I did that day was invisible. Nobody sees the 25 minutes you spend trying to get a baby to burp. Nobody sees you finally sit down and immediately stand back up because they’re crying. Nobody sees the contact nap where you’re trapped under a sleeping baby with your phone at 4% and your water across the room. 😂 Nobody sees the mental checklist constantly running in your head. When did she eat? Which side did she nurse on? When was the last diaper? Is she overtired? Is that rash normal? Did I take my vitamins? Did I ever move the laundry? Wait… did I eat? You’re doing things literally all day. They just don’t leave behind much evidence. There isn’t a finished spreadsheet. There isn’t a clean kitchen. There isn’t a checklist with 14 satisfying little checkmarks. Sometimes there’s just a fed baby sleeping on your chest. And apparently that has to count. After I messaged with that mom, I opened the map. There she was. Ohio. And around her were all these other little lights. Other moms feeding babies, rocking babies, pumping, scrolling, surviving whatever version of the day they were having. It made me wonder how many of us went to bed that night feeling like we hadn’t done enough. How many looked at the dishes or the laundry or the unanswered texts and thought: What did I even do today? So here’s my answer now. I fed my baby. I held her. I changed her. I comforted her. I learned another day’s worth of tiny things about her. I kept showing up every time she needed me, even when I was exhausted. And yes… the dishwasher can wait. 😂 If you’re in this season too and today feels like you accomplished absolutely nothing, look at the little person beside you. You did more than it looks like. A lot of motherhood happens in ways nobody can see. 💛 #mom #baby #MomsofTikTok #momtok #momlife
