@soul_and_substance: These are some of the last looms in America still weaving selvedge denim. The nearly 80-year-old Draper shuttle looms once helped produce the denim behind generations of Levi's 501s, one of America's most iconic blue jeans. After surviving multiple mill closures, 45 of these historic machines have found a new home in Trion, Georgia. Restoring them isn't just about saving old machines. It's about preserving a way of making denim that modern mass production largely left behind. Their story is part of the latest episode of "Curiosities of the South," which explores how America lost much of its denim industry, how Japan became the global leader in premium selvedge denim and whether American-made jeans can make a comeback. Give us a follow and watch the full "How America Lost Denim" series now on our TikTok page! I'm so glad to see so much interest in the original cotton industry. Polyester is actually plastic, toxic and just about everything we wear today. We need to get back to 100% cotton.

Those looms are in Japan and were sold in the 70s— which is why Japanese denim is such a cult thing

NC is still known for textile education, but it’s a shame to see so much of our trades getting exported. Thank you for the video!

No other looms like them in the world. Worlds best Denim came off those looms at one time. They have a priceless piece of North Carolina history right there in Trion Georgia

I am a 4th generation textile kid. Yarn spinners for Cone, Harriet &Henderson, and many more. Our family started a mill in 1888 on the South gork of the catawba River and had 4 mills in Lincolnton and Kings Mtn.

Probably would have still been kicking but everything was starting to be sent to other countries like Mexico, South America, or Europe in the late 80’s through the 90’s.

Who sells the end product of just a good quality pair of jeans made from this material??? My father worked in a mill for years and I remember him making extra money by cleaning the cotton from the section of the looms called Hettle’s (sorry if the spelling is wrong)

The difference is the reason denim has the reputation it has. Old jeans would last very very long time. New stuff won’t even make it a year
