CA teachers get a pension and it's one reason our education spending is f*cked. Teachers deserve a pension but retiring at 55 and then receiving three to four million dollars worth of pension is sinking us. Yes they do contribute but a small percentage compared to the payout.

In Ohio, I’ll retire at 32 years at age 58. I should go another year but at this point I’m just too tired.

NJ still does. Sadly we have tiers so I am tier 1 and can get my full pension at age 55 with at least 25 years but there are now up to tier 6 and with each tier its more years teaching and a higher age. we contribute to it as well.

Not sustainable. Thats why they are getting away from it. Nobody was smart enough to know we would live to +90 and also didn’t know how bad inflation would be.

Illinois TRS teachers do NOT pay into social security…only pay into TRS. There are two tiers. I was in Tier 1 and was able to retire with 35 years (33 + 2 years sick leave accrued). Tier 2 is not good. I think they have to teach until 67

My mother started teaching in 1960 and retired September 1998. Her pension was between $3000 and $3500 until she passed January 2022. *I paid my parents bills the last year of their lives. That is how I knew.

New York State still offers a pension. We are broken up into different Tiers. I was tier 4, and retired a couple years ago. The rule was I had to be 55 and have 30 years of teaching for full benefits. I’m not sure about the three tiers that came before mine. I know that the most current tier 6 has to work until 63 for full pension. You can retire at any age, but you take a reduced pension benefit if you do so.

many states stopped pensions and just have 403b plans that suck, there are very few benefits to go into teaching now

Pension plans were part of the attraction for persons to enter public service jobs at lower salaries than in the private sector. The lack of a future pension is one of the reasons for teacher shortages around the nation.

Everyone working should get pensions...Its unfortunate that it all depends what industry you work in ...Teachers here are way overpaid ,thanks to back door, middle of the night teacher union deals...healthcare for life, spouse too, walk with a 25k check on top of that ..act like they're saving the world ...

Texas still offers one. Retirement eligibility is determined by years of service plus your age, that number is different depending on the year you started.

Tennessee teacher and I retired at 52 with thirty years of service. Current teachers have the choice of putting their money in a 401k or not putting anything away for retirement. We didn't have a choice, but our Tennessee Teacher Retirement System is one of the best! I receive 48% of the average of my last five years' salary.

NV and I can get 75% of my last 3 years of salary. I can retire in 10 years at 60 and get full benefits. Trying to decide if I’m staying or not. It’s been extremely stressful.

Pensions are absolutely going away. People who think their pensions around going to last for the rest of their lives are in for a rude awakening.
