I’m just simply explained to them that you have to get back to work and you will talk later. Some of those patients don’t have families and are so bored that they just want somebody to talk to.

I always say, "I'd love to hear the rest of the story, but I have to do a few things, I'll come back when I have a few" then make sure I go back and I say " so I have about 3 min, can you finish that story in that time?"

I adjust the volume on my work phone... in my pocket if I can do it from the buttons or put it on the counter next to the computer where I'm charting... makes it sound like you're getting a call and I fake answer and say okay I'm coming/be right there!
