Is Cortisol Really Causing Your Belly Fat? Scroll through social media and you will see it everywhere: "cortisol belly," cortisol detox teas, and supplements that promise to lower your stress hormone and flatten your stomach. It is time to separate the science from the sales pitch. What cortisol is: Cortisol is a hormone made by your adrenal glands. You need it to live. It helps regulate blood sugar, blood pressure, inflammation, and your sleep-wake cycle. It naturally rises in the morning and falls at night. What everyday stress does: Ongoing stress can affect belly fat, but usually indirectly. Stress can lead to poor sleep, stress eating, more alcohol, less exercise, and cravings for high-calorie foods. Those behaviors add up. For most people, everyday stress is one term in the equation, not the whole answer. What Cushing's syndrome is: Cushing's syndrome is a medical condition in which the body is exposed to truly excessive cortisol for a long time. The most common cause is taking steroid medicines such as prednisone. Less often, it is caused by a tumor that makes too much cortisol or the hormone that triggers it. Possible signs that deserve a doctor's attention include: - Rapid weight gain in the face, upper back, and abdomen with thinner arms and legs - Wide purple stretch marks - Easy bruising - Muscle weakness, especially in the hips and shoulders - New or worsening high blood pressure or blood sugar - Bone loss or fractures If several of these sound familiar, talk to your doctor. Diagnosis requires specific tests ordered and interpreted by a doctor, not an online quiz. Why this distinction matters: If you have Cushing's syndrome, you need medical care. If you do not, blaming cortisol can lead you to spend money on products that do not work while ignoring the factors that do, such as sleep, activity, alcohol, and food quality. What helps with everyday stress: - A regular sleep schedule - Daily movement, even a short walk - Time outdoors and with people you care about - Prayer, meditation, or deep breathing - Saying no to things that drain you Stress is real. But for most people, the solution is not a pill. It is a plan. My book explains the difference between ordinary stress and medically excessive cortisol, so you can focus on what will truly help. From my book, The Belly Fat Equation: Insulin, Cortisol, Hormones, and the Science of Losing Visceral Fat for Good by Don P.
