Oh poor boy was stress panting the whole time too. You’re doing amazing! Calm and cool and being his anchor is exactly what you need to do. Another thing I was taught is to bring treats and reward the instant he disengages from the trigger (I think you said other dogs specifically). Don’t wait for perfect calm, just watch close and as soon as he looks away, turns his head, gives you any notice at all, reward. The more you do that he’ll learn that looking at you instead of the trigger when he sees it is how to get rewarded and he’ll do it more and more and be calmer and calmer. You can up the criteria when he’s consistently looking to you instead and wait to reward till it’s been a second and then till he’s more calm and so on. I really hope this helps, I was taught all that by a trainer!

if he has outburst I would move him further away but still in sight of people or dogs. As far as he needs just close enough that he can see them. Treating is very good

You’re doing great! I’d reward him for calm existence when there’s no dog first to pattern the right behavior so he’s more set up for success when a dog does come! And I always say, distance and movement can be super beneficial to help dogs work through reactions and recovery! And always try and end on a win!

You need to find his threshold and where it starts. I have worked through it with a few dogs. It also helps if you have a friend with a calm dog who is kind of aloof but still a stranger to your dog. Have the other dog stationary, I use a back tie. Walk your dog towards him as relaxed as possible. Once you start to see him tense up or a slight change in behavior, pause there, reward for relaxing or turn around if he continues to tense. If he’s just kind of stuck there give him a command like down, if he’s can still follow commands, gentle praise. Once he relaxes, or settles, big praise and walk away from the the pressure of the other dog. With each time you should get a little closer. Successive approximation.

I love that you're open about this, I think everyone thinks all your animals are 1000000% trained and you're completely in command when they're still an animal and not perfect. he seems to be getting ahead of any threats to you if that makes sense? protecting you. still a 10/10 doggo 🥰

hey! i dont know if this will help since i obviously dont know your dog, but maybe it helps if youre sitting on a bench or standing up. my dog usually goes off even worse when im low on the ground, because she thinks she has to 'protect' me. again, i dont know if this works for you, i wish you the best of luck!

A bit of unsolicited advice...but I might just start further away from where people are walking, he is CONSTANTLY appearing over threshold in this video. You wanna set him up for more minutes of success then failure especially in the beginning

I've had to do this with my dog for the past couple YEARS. He's MUCH, MUCH better than he was, but I'd trained him to a point where he could walk by another dog on the other side of the road & be... okay. not reactive but unable to focus well with commands because he's too stressed. well, a couple weeks ago, the neighbor's damn dog got out & attacked my dog & now we've taken back SO MUCH PROGRESS!!! & I'm SO FUCKING heartbroken!!!
