In 1864, the town of Mystic Falls was on the brink of the American Civil War, and its founding families formed a secret council to hunt down and eliminate vampires, a series of events that would change the town's history forever when Katherine Pierce, a vampire on the run from the Original vampire Klaus, arrived posing as an orphaned girl and stayed at the Salvatore Boarding House, where she captivated both brothers, Damon and Stefan, compelling them to keep her secret and secretly feeding them her own blood to set the stage for their future transformation; the council, led by figures like Giuseppe Salvatore and Jonathan Gilbert, planned a "round-up" to capture all vampires in the town, spiking the water supply with vervain to weaken them, which led to Katherine's capture after Stefan unknowingly drank the vervain-laced water and fed on her, and the captured vampires were taken to Fell's Church to be burned alive, but a powerful witch named Emily Bennett intervened, sealing them in a hidden tomb beneath the church, while Katherine made a deal with a werewolf named George Lockwood to fake her death and escape, leaving the other 26 vampires trapped, and when Damon and Stefan tried to rescue Katherine, they were both shot and killed by their own father, Giuseppe, but because they had Katherine's blood in their system, they woke up in transition—Stefan fed on his father's blood to complete his transformation, while Damon initially resisted but was convinced by Stefan to do the same, and Emily Bennett later gave the brothers Lapis Lazuli rings to allow them to walk in the sun, leaving Mystic Falls with a fractured relationship that set the stage for their centuries-long rivalry.
