This was determined by our UNION. All holidays are by seniority. So unless someone with high seniority chooses to work a holiday it will always be the amount of lowest ranked staff working

We have A & B team schedules, so one year you are A and the next year you are B. A is Thanksgiving eve and day, New Year's eve and day and July 4th, B is Christmas eve and day, memorial day and labor day

We work one winter and one summer holiday and they’re rotated every year. So year 1- Memorial Day/thanksgiving, year 2- Fourth of July/Christmas, year 3- Labor Day/new year.

we signed up for holidays with a minimum requirements for major and minor holiday. major was devide in half summer winter minor in thirds requirements was 1 major and 4 minor day befor and after a holiday we're considered minor as well as bank holidays/easter/Halloween and the like unless you worked every weekend then the minors were waved. calling out on a major was a final written unless you could prove serious illness or injury

We did a rotating yearly schedule with 1 summer, 1 winter; we knew what it was ahead and we could swap between if needed. So I used to swap onto Christmas prior to kids a lot of times

We split between 2 “teams”: weekday/night crew and weekend day/night crew. One team works Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, & New Years Day. The other works Black Friday, Christmas Day, and New Years Eve. Teams swap every year (so I worked Thanksgiving & Christmas Eve & NYs day last year, I’m working the other holidays this year). If you want a holiday off, you gotta find someone willing to swap.

I would love a 3 day rotating holiday schedule. So you work the entire thanksgiving Christmas or new years and then memorial 4th of July or Labor Day. You work the day before day after and holiday 3 in a row is do-able then you are off 2 of the holidays. No one is with me. 👎

We have a holiday track so you only work one big holiday every year and it changes every year

I’ve worked at hospitals that have done it both ways. First is the rotation, you’re in a set group (1, 2, 3 or A, B, C) and there’s a predetermined set of holidays to the groups and you rotate every year through them. My current hospital is this way. I kind of like this because there’s never a surprise what holidays you’re working this year vs next year. The other is what you described, the ranking. I prefer that because there’s certain holidays I prefer to ALWAYS have off (NYE/NY) and ones I ALWAYS prefer to work (all of Christmas). With either option, you can do swaps between holidays or take/give up the holiday.

We have a list of tons of holidays that we do and don’t get paid for including the big ones, Easter, Mother’s Day, Halloween…. And then we all get put on a year list. The list changes every year and you rotate through every 3 years. Very very nice not gonna lie

We go by seniority and pick the holidays we want to work, one summer one winter. My manager just goes down the list and asks us individually.

I always offered to work them all, and moved Christmas to the middle of January. That way I didn’t have to fight for it off, I got the holiday pay, and I hit the after Christmas sales so the kids got better/more gifts

we have group A and B. holidays are New Year's, Memorial Day, 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas. Each group covers every other holiday, with the other group scheduled for the day before the holiday. every year the holiday changes to the other group so you don't have two Christmases in a row. what i didn't know until last year is that it doesn't mean anything to call off on your holiday beyond the normal occurrence you get for calling off any shift. We have 3 holiday teams for both major and minor holidays. If you’re scheduled for that holiday you are working both eve and the day of so you don’t have to work the same holiday for next 2 years. So my holiday this year is Easter, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. I don’t have to work these holidays on 27 and 28. I know it sucks to work both days but you don’t have to worry every single year.

For us, we have several schedules. Some blue bird, some 4 on 4 off, some 7 on 7 off, some ER doctors work 24s. For us, if it falls on your day, you work it. Then the next year you’re off. 🤷🏼♀️Everyone likes it that way.

When I worked in a hospital for 20 years, their policy was you were required to work every other major holiday and that included Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and all the Christmas time holidays. When you came into the position on your unit, you just automatically were assigned to whatever the next holiday the person prior to you had been assigned. If you called in on a holiday for being sick, you had to have a written doctors excuse to confirm that you were seen and we’re indefinitely ill otherwise you were not paid for the day before or the day after the holiday that you called in for even if you work, it worked out really well. There was a couple times where coworkers would ask to trade with you and sometimes it worked out and sometimes it didn’t, but we never had any real hassles. I don’t know how they still do it, but I think that is the fair way to do it.
