Almost nobody would say that sentence out loud, but it's running underneath a huge number of relationships, quietly shaping how two people treat each other. Here's the mechanism: men and women harm each other in ways neither one can fully see. The harm isn't always intentional, and that's exactly what makes it so hard to name. A woman hurts a man in ways she genuinely doesn't recognize, because she can't see herself from his position. A man hurts a woman in ways he doesn't understand, for the same reason. Neither person set out to cause pain. But the pain happens anyway, over and over, without either side clearly seeing their own part in it. So what does a person do with pain they can't name and can't stop? They try to control it. He tries to control her so being with her costs him less. She tries to control him so she can finally feel safe. It looks like a power struggle. It's actually two people trying to manage an injury they can't see clearly, using control because they were never taught another way. The fighting isn't really about who's "right." It's two nervous systems trying to protect themselves from pain they can't fully understand. That conflict only dissolves when both people become whole enough to see the truth of what's actually happening — not who's winning, but what's actually hurting.
