@madmires: In my previous video, I highlighted how certain European people, both historically and today, have claimed, reimagined or appropriated identities and cultures that weren’t originally theirs much like some of the Black people they love to mock for claiming connections to Ancient Egypt, the Hebrews, Native Americans, the Moors and so on. Unfortunately, it’s true that some people of European heritage have also engaged in cultural appropriation, historical identity claims and the rewriting of the past. If we’re going to have that conversation, we should apply the same standard consistently. So in this follow-up, I’m highlighting other historical examples of African figures who were depicted as European/white in artwork and publications, including Mansa Musa of Mali, Samba Pango of Loango, Queen Nzinga of Ndongo and Matamba, and the ancestral figures of the Buganda Kingdom, Kintu and Nambi. Some of these images date back to the 19th century, and the original context behind each image matters. But the broader point is simple: if we’re going to scrutinise identity claims, appropriation and the rewriting of history, that scrutiny shouldn’t only be directed at Black people.
