In most Apartment complex contracts, it says if you’re gonna be gone longer than X amount of days, you have to let them know so stuff like this does not happen.

oh i would be so pissed!!! Why wouldn't they try to contact her? when my mom passed away the landlord still called her phone even though they knew me. Just to be sure.

They would have required a certified copy death certificate in order to move forward in anything. When my mom passed I got a dozen copies of hers just to be safe and I have 1 left Get the house in my name, closing her back account, the electric and natural gas utilities, her investments, safety deposit box, among others needs a stamp and embossed copy to transfer
