FOREST ACRES, S.C. — Authorities say a vehicle fleeing a traffic stop was responsible for the Saturday night crash that damaged a Forest Acres home and caused evacuations that continued into Sunday morning due to a damaged gas line. Forest Acres Police said officers were initially called to the 1600 block of Atascadero Drive at 10:50 p.m. on Saturday to investigate a complaint of people arguing and fighting in the street. Officials said officers arrived in about four minutes and found that the group, which included minors, was attending a party at a rented home. Police said they noticed a burgundy Nissan Armada leave the house's backyard while officers questioned the renter, adding that the SUV almost struck people outside. A Forest Acres spokesperson said officers attempted to follow the SUV and saw it turn onto Ponte Vedra Road, turn off its lights and speed up. Officers said they attempted to stop the SUV but never initiated a pursuit. The SUV then crashed into a home after trying to make a sharp turn. Video from the scene shows the SUV narrowly missing a woman sitting on the porch at the time. Seven people then ran from the vehicle. City officials said neither the woman nor the other people inside the home were hurt. However, the crash damaged the home's gas meter, temporarily evacuating nearby homes. Columbia Fire officials said they couldn't cut off the gas because the vehicle was still on the meter. Dominion Energy crews were eventually able to stop the gas leak but had to dig up the gas line to do so. Two adults and a minor were found hiding in a creek after officers established a perimeter off Covenant Road. They've since been released pending the outcome of the investigation. Authorities are still working to interview witnesses and review video from the scene. In a statement released on Sunday, Police Chief Don Robinson said the wreck and the resulting gas leak put lives at risk and expressed relief that no residents were hurt. He said his office is working to identify the SUV driver and will pursue charges to
