@drtoddphillips: Are evangelical churches cults? I wouldn’t make that blanket claim. But after 20 years as a megachurch pastor in Southern Baptist and Bible church environments, I can now recognize how many of the dynamics I once called discipleship, holiness, biblical truth, and accountability can function as high-control religion. That was one of the strangest realizations of my deconstruction. I could watch Mormon Stories or learn about Scientology and immediately recognize religious control: boundaries around acceptable beliefs, behavior, questions, relationships, and what happened when someone rejected the system. Then I would look at my own evangelical world and use completely different language for remarkably similar mechanisms. We weren’t controlling behavior. We were encouraging people to “live righteous lives.” We weren’t controlling thought. We were teaching people to submit their thoughts to biblical truth. We weren’t demanding conformity. We had “accountability.” And I preached those ideas to thousands and thousands of people every week for years while sincerely believing I was helping people follow God. That sincerity matters. But sincerity doesn’t automatically make a high-control environment less controlling. Control doesn’t stop being control because you give it a spiritual name or wrap it in words like grace and love. If you grew up evangelical, Southern Baptist, or in a Bible church, where do you think the line is between legitimate religious discipleship and religious control? #Deconstruction #agnostic #exvangelical #faithjourney

Yes, l grew up in the Church of Christ in the 60’s-80’s (3rd generation). I’m in the “Outgroup” now. My mom (94), brother and SiL and all nephews and nieces are still active members. My wife snd I deconstructed about 12-14 years ago when our son was in college at UT Austin. We no longer attend worship services anywhere. For me it was as the Church swung even more into Christian Nationalism and everyone supported Trump. I was like “but the Emporer has no clothes on…why can’t they see that?” I still feel guilt about deconstructing but I also feel free (hard to explain) because when something is so ingrained in you from childhood it’s hard to go against it…even when critical thinking show’s otherwise. I’m not trying to persuade others to leave the church but I do view it now as a “cult like” group.

I was so into studying cults as a teen and young adult, I read books, articles, watched movies, was absolutely fascinated. And all the time I was a part of fundamental evangelical Christianity in America 💀

How do we alleviate the guilt? It’s just so ingrained, even though I no longer believe in the religion of control.

It’s soooooo hard to be out and have all your loved ones still in. They literally believe me to be a witch because I am free.

This is a great take. I consider myself a very smart person. When I was in it, I got sort of deceived into diving deep into history and theology as a sleight of hand to not see what the church was actually doing. By the time I did, it was like oh shit they got me too.

So true! I'm a PK and was married to a Pastor. It's traumatizing
I wish I could have lived with the freedom to choose what "I" wanted. I see it now, but sadly my children experienced it as well. I wish I could have been strong enough to leave it sooner.

i remember when i went to a church camp (very well known in brazil), one of our “activities” was to escape the christian’s persecutors, they would put on a siren really loud that would came from the lake with red lights on and when it was on we had to hide and the activity ended with all the fake persecutors holding a 10 year old at gun point (plastic gun) telling him do deny God or he would die mind you the kids there where between 9 and 14 years old

I don’t know if you’ve made a video on this yet, but I would love to hear your leaving the church and leaving your faith and really what that looked like. I’d be so interested.

Baptist private school education here then in Baptist churches until 50. I feel guilty looking for somewhere I feel I need to be worshipping or now what do you teach your kids? Not been in church in 2 years now. Not confused for myself but unsure what to teach my children now?

I was an American Evangelical for over 20 years. When I left, one of the main reasons I knew I had been in a cult was that I was genuinely scared that I'd lost my salvation. I still believe in Jesus and go to a traditional Protestant church now. But it took years to unwind the fear tactics that had me in a headlock.
