The real architect of the political self determination of South Sudan. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dr. Riek Machar played an important role in South Sudan’s struggle for self-determination and independence. In 1991, Machar, together with Lam Akol and Gordon Kong, broke away from John Garang’s SPLM/A and issued the Nasir Declaration. While Garang and the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement/A ruthlessly supported a united and secular Sudan, Machar and his South Sudanese Independence Movement/A argued that self determination should be the primary objective for the movement and that the people of South Sudan should have the right to decide their own future, including independence through a referendum. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Machar later led the South Sudan Independence Movement/Army (SSIM/A) and promoted self-determination in peace talks, including the Frankfurt Peace Talks and Abuja Peace Talks in 1992. In 2002, after Garang finally accepted the self- determination of South Sudan, they reconciled with he rejoined the SPLM/A. The southern movement then took part in the IGAD-led Kenya peace talks, which led to the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).The agreement gave the people of South Sudan the right to vote on independence. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In January 2011, South Sudanese voted overwhelmingly for independence, and South Sudan became an independent country on July 9, 2011. Without the political work of Dr Riek Machar there would be no Southern Sudan as we know it today.
