The Long Neck Karen, also known as the Kayan Lahwi, are an ethnic subgroup of the Karenni (Kayah) people. Their ancestral homeland is in Kayah State (Karenni State), eastern Myanmar, near the border with Thailand. Many Kayan families came to northern Thailand several decades ago to escape armed conflict and political instability in Myanmar. Today, some of them live in villages in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Mae Hong Son provinces. The women are famous for wearing brass coils around their necks, a tradition that usually begins in childhood. Contrary to popular belief, the rings do not actually stretch the neck. Instead, they gradually push the shoulders and collarbone downward, creating the appearance of a longer neck. This tradition is an important part of their cultural identity and heritage. Today, many Kayan people earn a living through handicrafts, traditional weaving, farming, and cultural tourism. Visitors are welcome to learn about their history, culture, and daily life, and purchasing handmade products helps support their local communities. It is important to treat their villages with respect, recognizing them not as exhibits, but as communities with a rich cultural heritage.
