@calmmoneycoach: What a little spending flexibility is worth in retirement
Can a couple retire in Canada on $500,000? This couple is 65 and wants to spend $60,000 a year. CPP and OAS cover $40,000 of that, so their savings cover the other $20,000. I ran their retirement 20,000 times. 1. Spend a flat $60,000 no matter what, and about 3 in 10 run out of money before 98. 2. Add one yearly rule: trim a little in bad years, give yourself a raise in good ones. A 35 percent market drop costs them about $2,000 that year. 3. With that rule they can start at $60,000 on $500,000. A flat plan that works 9 times in 10 needs about $620,000. The catch is you have to actually trim. If you know you won't, start lower. And rerun the plan every year. What would you cut first in a bad year? The planner, the spending rule calculator and the full guide are in my paid community at calmmoneycoach.com General education only. Illustrative couple, today's dollars, before tax. #retirementplanning #canadianretirement #retireon500k #cpp #oas

Oh_Curious_One🇨🇦 :
Please do more examples with singles. There are a lot of single people approaching retirement who are struggling to relate to these examples where couples have waaay more income and flexibility than we do.

$500k in retirement? 🤣🤣 I'll be lucky if I get $100K saved for retirement. I'm broke now and will be even more broke when I retire

My problem is how do you live off 60k? I think we live pretty frugally, but when I factor in heat, hydro, property tax, insurance, food, maintenance, gas and a car payment, we need more like 85k, with no trips and nothing extra (except dogs).
