The pakol from the late 1800s describe it in Chitral and parts of what is now Nuristan. One important historical account calls it a “Chitrali cap” and says it reached Nuristan through trade from Chitral. And why did ahmed shah masoud wear it ? According to the Afghanistan Analysts Network, Massoud encountered the pakol during his journey through Nuristan toward Panjshir in the late 1970s, where he spent time with local mujahideen. He and other Panjshiris subsequently adopted it.
