@ashleytheebarroness: Florence Mills’ parents had been enslaved. One generation later, she was a star on Broadway and in London. That is the part I keep thinking about. Not just how famous she became. How much Black possibility was already there. And how easily a woman that important can still disappear from memory. #BlackHistory #forgottenhistory #americanhistory #historytok #fyp
I have never heard of her. I am so glad for your introduction. Florence Mills

It’s terrifying how easy it is to erase history and people in just 2 or 3 generations 😰🥺😔

If the Prince of Wales was a fan and admirer there might be a recording in his personal belongings in the Royal vault( I think thats what it is called). Anyway...they save ere'thang that the royal family has ever taken interest in, lol! So there could be hope. 💜😁

We can only imagine the art, the literature, the innovations we were all denied because of the oppression of black people. Thank you for your research.

I know who she is because of "Black Beauty" by Duke Ellington and Fats Waller's songs "Bye Bye Florence" and "Florence".

Thanks for the info! The New York Public Library has a collection of more then 2700 wax cylinders some of which have been damaged that they have been in the process of digitizing for a few years. They were used untill the late 1920s. Maybe she is on one of them!

Mills made history in many other ways too. When Mills made her Broadway debut in the landmark all-Black musical Shuffle Along in 1921, the producers deliberately fought the status quo. They boarded the show at the Daly's 63rd Street Theatre and, in a highly controversial move for the era, integrated the orchestra seating, allowing Black and white patrons to sit side-by-side. The massive box-office success of the show proved to white theater owners that integrated audiences would not cause the riots they feared.
