When people get into affairs like this they become distant and mean. He was so deep in it that he likely started feeling like he was being unfaithful to the mistress when he was with his wife. People get so overtaken by fantasy and it is really insane. And it’s not actually about loving the mistress. How can you truly love someone you’ve never loved real life with and in an environment built on lies and deceit? They get addicted to the cocktail of secrecy, novelty, and validation. It’s dopamine overload and they chase the high of it. Very powerful. It’s essentially the same thing that happens to the brain in drug addiction. They will lie, steal, and sometimes even kill to get the high.
