When I started my current job some years ago, I walked into my boss's office to ask if I could use the restroom. She looked at me like I was crazy and said "Please tell me your last job didn't make you ask for bathroom breaks." Which, obviously, they did. She told me that was absurd, and I never needed to ask. Some years later, she showed up at my grandma's funeral 2hrs away to support me. She's an incredible boss.

2 weeks into a new job, my mom passed away suddenly. My manager was so kind. compassionate and accommodating. He told me to take as much time off as I needed [I had to travel to Kenya]. He sorted this out with HR and the company even sent me flowers. It was such a relief to not worry about my job on top of everything else.

I left a toxic job about 4 years ago the management would scream down the phone at me when I was ill or if I made any small mistake at work it would turn into a massive ordeal and they would try to give me a disciplinary. It got to the point I was having daily panic attacks leaving the house to go to work. I finally quit and am now in a wonderful job but he'll I still get mad anxiety calling in sick or if I'm getting called to the office even though it's always been for good things and it's been 4 years. crazy how much of a hold bad management can have over you. I have plenty of stories from the old one which would make your toes curl

I had a family member pass away after battling cancer and I had made my manager and the owner well aware when he was put on hospice that he would be passing soon. When he passed I let them know as soon as we opened as it was my off day. I had family coming in from other states and the funeral was a few days later. I battled for 3 days with my manager to get 2 days off for time with my family and then the funeral. They tried to tell me I could go to the funeral but then needed to come in later that day. I finally quit responding to the texts and when I quit battling they finally relented and allowed me the 2 days I asked for. People quit toxic managers not companies. Since then I have been very guarded about calling out. I have left my kid at home sick alone because he's old enough to be home alone for fear of losing my job if I call out. This is also the type of place that will see you sick at work and struggling, make you leave but then also require you to go to the dr to get a note so the absence is excused. They don't even offer insurance, but it is mandatory to get a dr excuse if you call out sick or leave early because you're sick. As a single parent I have to work, but it's a miserable place to be to feel like if you or your child is sick and you call out or have to leave early that you will be written up or fired.

a previous job... within weeks of starting a new job, my pet rabbit died on his way home from amputation surgery as he'd broken his leg. they let me take a couple days off to grieve his loss. I thought id found a great employer who was compassionate. within my year of employment with them, there were a number of micro aggressions as they really did not seem to understand neurodivergent people and publicly berated me for watching video while doing mindless formatting tasks, accusing me of not doing my job. I had to take 2 days off for outpatient surgery. I was out Thursday/Friday, came back Monday, Halloween, to be fired. they claimed there were customer complaints about me, though not further information provided. I had to pack my desk myself and carry it down stairs to my car after having bi-sal (fallopian tube removal) surgery. a few years later, the manager that yelled at me about not doing my job saw me and my partner at a nice restaurant and yelled my name repeatedly until I acknowledged him. I felt re-traumatized. 🥺 thankfully i have a really great partner who helped support me through it. 🥰

I was 10 days in to a new job when I got the call my dad was in a coma. My new boss drove me an hour north so I could pack a bag then 4 hours south to my home state and dropped me at the hospital. He did all the paperwork so I could get paid for my time off even though I had nothing banked

I had a dv situation about 7yrs ago. I was asst. manager. I told my boss that I had to leave the state that day and I’m sorry… she said “you do what’s best for your babies” then proceed to walk to the atm and pulled out $400 and tucked it in my pocket. I think about her daily!!! [Teary eyed]

I started a new job and of course two weeks later a fever. Before I had any pto… I was so stressed to let my boss know but omg he was so chill and checked in throughout the day and later in the week gave some tips to help alleviate discomfort for my daughter since he has 3 children himself 🥰

I once had a really bad manager but he was always really good about prioritizing family and once he said I used to be young and married and have kids and I didn't prioritize my family and now I'm old and I have a divorce and my kids don't speak to me

The school called me in the middle of my shift last Wednesday bc she was sick to her stomach. (I am a swim instructor/coach/lifeguard/deck supervisor and just happened to pick up my phone on a 5 minute break.) My boss told me to go immediately and covered the rest of my afternoon. Further, the next day we began to suspect appendicitis- her Dad was able to take her to the ER after dropping me off at work. Both my bosses had me share their personal cell phone #rs so that her Dad could get through to someone ASAP as soon as they had an update. And the lifeguard manager was prepared to jump in and teach my classes if I had to rush to the hospital. (Thankfully she was fine.) I may not get paid like I did when I was a Sr Director in corporate, but this EXACT situation is why I work where I do and am no longer in corporate. #YMCA
