O coração de uma baleia-azul (Balaenoptera musculus) é uma das estruturas anatômicas mais impressionantes de todo o reino animal. Pesando cerca de 180 quilos, este órgão vital tem o tamanho aproximado de um carro de golfe ou de um Fusca pequeno, e sua artéria principal, a aorta, é tão larga que uma criança pequena conseguiria passar por dentro dela engatinhando. Essa máquina biológica descomunal funciona em um ritmo surpreendentemente lento. Enquanto o coração humano bate, em média, entre 60 e 100 vezes por minuto, o coração da baleia-azul bate apenas de 4 a 8 vezes por minuto quando ela mergulha para se alimentar. Essa frequência cardíaca extremamente baixa é uma adaptação evolutiva crucial chamada "reflexo de mergulho", que permite ao animal conservar oxigênio enquanto desce às profundezas do oceano para caçar toneladas de krill. Quando ela sobe à superfície para respirar, os batimentos aceleram para algo entre 25 e 37 batidas por minuto para reoxigenar o sangue rapidamente. O poder desse órgão é tão imenso que os cientistas conseguem detectar o som de seus batimentos cardíacos usando equipamentos de sonar a uma distância de até 3 quilômetros através da água. Esse gigantismo é proporcional ao resto do corpo do animal, que pode passar dos 30 metros de comprimento e pesar mais de 150 toneladas, consolidando a baleia-azul como o maior animal que já existiu na Terra — superando, inclusive, os maiores dinossauros conhecidos.
