I have the Seek and Merlin app downloaded on my phone because when I’m outside and I can’t identify something, I get so frustrated. I was really frustrated for a while because I couldn’t identify birds by sound (till I found the Merlin app) and I would scroll for hours on bird sound websites trying to memorize them for the next time I heard them in my area. (I realize it sounds like an ad. It’s not. I’m just really excited by the fact that I can identify birds by sound now.)

My mum always taught me about plants and I loved having both knowledge about native Australian plants and the introduced plants around us. When I moved to the UK, I was struck by how different the plants were. When I met my now husband, we would go for walks and I’d always be wondering what the plants were around us and he would just shrug and say he didn’t know. It didn’t hit me until then that I was privileged in my plant knowledge

I’m not into trees per se, but I did have that species loneliness before I got into poisonous plants! Those are basically my Mountain Mahogany. Foxglove (Digitalis Purpurea) in particular!

My mountain mahogany were the chickweed and wild violets I saw pop up every spring at my school and I had to make little bouquets and flower crowns. Collecting the abundant acorns around my neighbors yard because they were a nuisance on the lawnmower and I’d leave them for the squirrels

The way you talk about trees reminds me a lot of Tolkien :3 when I imagine Tolkien on his walks (the ones his friends criticized him for dragging on forever haha) and he spoke about how much he loved the nature around him. He likely had a similar awakening, so I imagine the words he would've said aloud and weren't written down held a similar wonder, appreciation, and weight.

the tree that I first connected with was a white ash in my front yard growing up. I loved her SO much and would play around her all the time. The landlord tore her down because she was growing too close to the sidewalk but she lives on in the fact that I will always greet large old trees and give them a grateful pat.
