TBH this is on both sides. We have seen dozens of family movies where the hottest mom dates the fat average Joe dad and puts up with everything he puts her through because they love each other. Same with the nerdy guy going for the hot chick in the movie. It's always been a trope. 🤷🏿♂️

Same with entertainment with men. The "fattie and the hottie" trope for sit-coms (like King of Queens) Studies show that men often overrate their attractiveness and misread platonic interactions from woman as romantic interest.

how is this any different than the media trope of the below average guy getting the 10/10 girl? Id argue its wayyyy more common, not just in movies but TV shows, sitcoms, children's media, etc

to all the people saying this is the same for men's fiction, at surface level this may seem true. and I'm not even saying it's never the case. but in men's fiction the female is just above average attractive or even average attractive. it's one thing. the woman isn't also a CEO, Billionaire, Supermodel, and 5 other things. Maybe the woman is a little out of his league...but she's still just an above average woman. And half the time in male fiction they still cast a moderately attractive male lead. so he's also buff and handsome too. where as with the female fiction, it's always the top 1% of the 1% of men..not only is he handsome and super fit, but he's also rich, he's mysterious, he's suave, he's cool and charming, etc... it's the the unfair comparison of in men's fiction a handsome fit action hero dates the top 25% of women. but in women's fiction a plain average uninteresting woman dates the top .01% of a man. it perpetuates this delusion that women don't need to do anything to attract "the best man on earth"

OMG! Yes I was just thinking about this when I was watching the movie love theory or something on prime. And I wondered geez why are the characters all the same an average cute but average woman (and often just the same actress) instead of an actual sexy woman. Came to the same conclusion and thought it was sad but I understand the reason for it
