Starting a business is not as simple as learning a skill, opening a social media page, and posting your work. Even if you have TikTok and Instagram and consistently post what you do, that doesn’t automatically mean people will notice you, your videos will go viral or you’ll start getting customers.
The market is already full of people doing similar businesses. Most customers usually go to someone they already know, someone they’ve heard about or someone recommended by another person. Connections also matter a lot. Many opportunities come through people knowing other people.
Personally, I feel like I’ve tried almost everything. I learned henna and tried working with it. I learned makeup and tried that too. I’ve tried different types of bouquets, including hijab bouquets and gift bouquet packages. Now I’ve learned decoration and I’m trying that as well.
But the difficult part is that simply learning something and posting it doesn’t guarantee success. You can post again and again and still get very little attention. Sometimes you see someone whose video suddenly goes viral and their business starts getting noticed, but that doesn’t happen to everyone. There is an element of chance involved too.
And there’s another problem: if you’re not getting actual jobs, what are you supposed to keep posting? To create content about your work, you first need opportunities to actually do the work.
So when people say “Just start a business, post your work consistently, and customers will come,” I don’t think it’s that simple. Skills and consistency are important, but visibility, connections, customers, opportunities, and sometimes luck all play a part too.
