So many people being against the hanafi opinion in this matter… sad. The Ahnaf don't say this out of nowhere, their reasoning actually makes sense, even more than the other ones. The Quran already prohibits dead animals (الميتة) in general, and this is the starting point. Then the Prophet ﷺ makes two exceptions: "Two dead animals are made lawful for us, سمك (FISH) and locusts." So the default is haram, and the exception names fish (سمك) specifically. For Hanafis (or even for all), if you want to permit something outside that exception, you need clear evidence, and "everything from the sea" is a much bigger claim than what the hadith says. On top of that, the Quran says the Prophet ﷺ forbids the khaba'ith, the things people naturally find repulsive/disgusting, and they put things like crabs or frogs there. As for the hadith about the sea ("its dead is halal") and the ayah in suratu al-ma’idah about the game of the sea, they read those together with the more specific hadith, so they understand them as referring to fish. That's why the scholars of the other schools differ, but the Hanafi position comes from working with all the texts together. Not just blind reading, but actually using your aql and seeing the whole of Islam and of Rasulullah ﷺ. Showing hate for this is showing hate for 'ilm in general. Naudhubillah. May Allah bless our scholars without end 🤲🏼
