@dr.shawna: What can Lanterns teach us about algorithmic bias? This video examines specific concepts from sociology (including algorithmic bias and “The New Jim Code”) to unpack the “test” that appears in Episode three of the show. Scholars Safiya Umoja Noble and Ruha Benjamin provide the concepts and frameworks we’re using to unpack how our assumptions about technology can produce things that are very far from unbiased. For more on that, let’s go to the research! Make sure to check out @Lanterns on @HBO Max #socialscience #learnontiktok #EduTok #popculture
Here's a little tidbit for you: I am the voice of John Stewart in DC Universe Online 🟩

What other systems claim to be “unbiased” but are more complicated than that?

I think it’s important to realize that the episode really does not make a very good case for the test being unfair. As much as it tried to get us to side with John’s mom, We have to look at what actually happened. Hal jordan got the ring and became a hero, and an extremely good person, if a little rough around the edges. But what happened to John Senior. He turned into an abusive, angry, short tempered man, when he was rejected. I’m scared to think what he would’ve become if he had been given the ring. The show asks us to question wether Hal really deserved the ring and if John senior was unfairly shafted, but then goes on to show us exactly why John senior couldn’t be trusted with that kind of power

one of my biggest fears with all the push for AI to be integrated into medical fields is that it will only worsen existing biases that show up in things like algorithms.

One of the most interesting aspects of the green lanterns in the comics is how they can be seen as a metaphor for diversity in a work force strengthening its ability to function. I wonder if Jon Stewart will have moments in the second season where he is discriminated in the lantern corps not for being black, but for being human. *Humans are kinda seen as a backwater species in the show it seems*

I think one of my favorite parts that really strikes home at the rings bias is when the guardian talks to Jon’s mom and says her true form is scary and she still wants to see it and is unafraid of her. This shows how the ring it self is bias towards men because there was a fearless adult in the house by their standards.

I really enjoyed this season. I’ve been quite happy with the depth of stories that have been coming out in the past 5-10years with superhero shows.

You’re totally on point about algorithms and it’s really important to remember with AI! Language models are just predicting likely next words. All of the bias on the internet is baked in to the model. If the training data says the sky is green, the model will say that too. Acting like it’s unbiased is nuts!

Yeeeesssss! This was so well-explained. Thank you! I think the ring actually measures the privilege of not being afraid—not fearlessness itself.

Also, you don’t need to have seen the show or the episode to watch (I try to explain the scenes I reference to break down the concepts)

I think an important note is that the guardians aren’t looking for people who are “worthy” they are looking for people who will be powerful with the ring. A married man is much less likely to not be afraid, because he is afraid of losing his family. Regardless of the reason being valid or not, the guardians only concern is whether or not the wielder of the ring will be afraid (which weakens/cancels out the power of the ring) which would open it up to being taken by an enemy force. This is of course stupid, because lacking fear in no way means that someone is a “good person” or “worthy”, however lacking fear does probably mean that the individual will be able to use the ring to its fullest potential. The guardians want weapons, not hero’s, hence Hal Jordan’s constant conflict with them

Yes, you’re true about algorithms. The problem is is that the writers of that show they’re taking massive liberty with the selection process. The simplest way that a green lantern is chosen is when one dies the ring goes and finds a suitable successor and chooses them. They don’t ask them questions. They don’t do any of that. They find a shooter.

Have you run into Gil Duran yet or has his recent book Nerd Reich shown up on your radar? He was on Democracy Now when it was released last month. It documents a lot of the pieces some of us who’ve been in Silicon Valley long enough have known about through social connections for a long time but have had a hard time getting journalists to cover and other people to take seriously. Ties directly to algorithms of oppression and stakeholders we’ve been dealing with intentionally trying to keep it that way.

It’s also a wildly stupid criteria. Are you unable to acknowledge your fear when suddenly levitated by a green mystery thing?
