@hospicenursepenny: couldn’t agree more! Nurses who think people deserve to be sick because of poor choices need to find a new job! @Nurse Conner #nurse #healthcare #hospicenursr
Omg I know. I cannot stand that phrase. No compassion or understanding at all.

Go into any nurses station, and you'll find an unholy amount of caffeine, nicotine, and door dash, and over half would love to take you up on a drink after shift. Any nurse who says that is just lucky enough to be on the "before" side!

I see this problem a lot in the cancer community. Lung cancer comes with the (they caused it themselves) stigma, and it’s a lot harder for them to get the funding for research, and treatment that they need. You shouldn’t have to win some cancer lottery just to have a chance. It’s hypocritical to think a single one of us hasn’t partook in some sort of risky activity at some point in their lives. It doesn’t change the fact that they deserve care just as much as anyone else

I work at the other end of the spectrum- NICU, and this is the BS said about moms with addiction issues. Do I have feel terrible for a withdrawing infant or one born early due to the drug exposure? Of course. Do I show compassion for a mom who is finally seeing the outcome of her addiction? Of course. No bad choice is in a vacuum and no one goes out to harm their (or their child’s) health.

nursing attracts like police. some go into it to help people. some go in because they are on a power trip.

That's the general reaction to my Aunt dying from cancer. She had a type of cancer that smokers get and was in agony before hospice, but people roll their eyes and say she did it to herself. She may have been a mess, but cancer is cancer and no one "deserves" it.

a patients's choices can lead to certain outcomes/health conditions, but they still deserve to be shown kindness and compassion and compassion regardless of their past actions. we work with what we have now.

I'm an inpatient oncology nurse and we do a lot of end of life care. I genuinely do not gaf if your actions in life led to your cancer or your dying stages. if you are in my care, you get so much love

No one chooses to be addicted to whatever their "vice" is but to judge someone at their worst is awful. I have unfortunately worked with many that judge and damn it breaks my heart every time.

the only time i have felt remotely like that was a drunk driver that wound up paralyzed and had t-boned a teenager while on their way from their partners house to the person they was cheating on them with. they were mad at the teenager and took no responsibility for their actions.
I never treated them different though. they needed care and that was my job.
I think my disgust was more with how they behaved after and not the drunk driving.

I can see how a nurse could get there, with patients who keep showing up for the same problem, when the problem is something they have the ability to fix. but once your head gets to that place, you lose perspective of what "ability to fix" actually is.

Thank you 💜 I’m obese and an ultrasound tech and the way I heard people talk about patients (smaller than me) while I was in clinical rotations made my blood boil. Often even people who disagree with putting down people for smoking/substance abuse still judge people for their weight. If an addiction deserves compassion why doesn’t a food addiction deserve the same?

My husband had larynx cancer bc of smoking. He quit way before his diagnosis. Yes he did to himself but he grew up when smoking was normal. He didn’t think he would die because of it. After 43 years I miss him terribly ❤️

My step-dad died in part due to chronic alcohol abuse, and he would literally cry sometimes bc he couldn't stop drinking. Nothing worked to curb his compulsion to drink. It's sad ppl dont have any empathy. No one truly wants to live like that.
