Well... I got news for ya... There wasn't any lottery for the draft when my number came up. (It eventually caught up with me in my 60s, but I got sent home because of bad heart valves).

That's an experience I'll never forget. I don't want to talk about it.

I turned 18, my first draft number was 364. There were only 365 days. SO -I, the son of a WWII B-29 pilot, walked in the local Army recruiters office, tested, then went to the Army base, got my physical, swore the oath, went home, and waited until enough recruits signed up. Then I got in THAT staff car and rode to Missouri, to a base named Ft. Leonard Woods. I enlisted for the Vietnam war, served three years, then came home.

I did go into Naval Air. Worked on the World's best fighter at the time. But I had a strange program. Basic, then Navy A School. So I reported for basic on October 22nd. After my school, came back home and worked, 4 months, but knew October 22nd, AGAIN!, I'm, Gone, AGAIN! 730 days...Basically, 50% at an air base, but...and my worst ever F word was, FLEET! So, other 50% on, a Carrier. 5,000. GUYS. But I had friends on the ground, carrying M-16's, so I was grateful. Fortunately, all of my friends on the ground, also made it back. For THAT, I'm very Grateful. I've never, so far, met one single person, who agreed with Us Being There.

The first lottery was held in 1969. My number was pulled and I had to report to the Army nine months later, Oct 1970.

My husband missed being called by two numbers. They suspended drafting for the rest of that year. So thankful he didn’t have to go. We saw friends come home in coffins or seriously messed up mentally.

Yep. No. 26. Always wanted to serve. Planned on likely MC. Just married and family coming when letter arrived. After 1A physical I went to the AF recruiter. I spent a great 42 years. Retired and 74. My best decision ever.
