Every year, millions of pilgrims travel to Fátima. But very few know that the name itself is linked to a much older legend — the story of a Moorish woman called Fátima. 👑 The story takes us back to the middle of the 12th century, when the Christian kingdom of Portugal was expanding south into Muslim-held territory. According to later versions of the legend, a Portuguese knight named Gonçalo Hermigues, known by the nickname “Traga-Mouros”, led a raid and carried away a young Muslim woman named Fátima. She arrived as a captive, far from her family and everything she knew. But the legend takes an unexpected turn. Over time, Gonçalo and Fátima are said to have fallen in love. Before marrying him, she converted to Christianity and took a new name: Oureana. And this is where the legend begins to explain the map of the region. According to tradition, lands associated with the couple came to preserve her original name: Fátima. And the nearby town of Ourém is also traditionally said to take its name from Oureana — a connection that belongs to legend rather than proven etymology. The medieval castle of Ourém still stands on the hilltop just a few kilometres away. 🏰 The story was preserved and developed in later chronicles, including versions associated with the early modern chronicler Frei Bernardo de Brito. Historians do not treat the story as documented fact, but as a legend created around the medieval frontier world of the Reconquista. And yet the names remain. So when you visit Fátima, you’re not only walking through one of the world’s great Marian pilgrimage centres. You’re also stepping into a much older story — a legend of love, conversion and conflict from a time when different faiths and cultures met on the changing frontier of medieval Portugal. Every year, millions of pilgrims travel to Fátima. But very few know that the name itself may come from a Moorish princess. 👑 📩 bookings@portugaljourneyswithpeppe.com 📱 WhatsApp: +351 937965818 🔗 www.portugaljourneyswithpeppe.com/fátima-nazaré-óbidos Because these are not just tours, they are Portugal Journeys with Peppe.
