This is awful but I don't understand how this means that ethical breeding exists?

My local shelter is a no kill shelter and has limited space because they’re small so they have a wait list of dogs waiting to come in when they have space. They do also assist people with private rehomes by posting them on their page with all the info and contact information. It’s the only shelter in my entire province so taking your dog to an open intake isn’t an option

That sounds awful, but also unavoidable if people continue to buy/adopt without proper research (?)

There needs to be more funding for shelters, and I would rather have a shelter that will send animals to other shelters so they can get the proper help with what they need, rather than keeping and euthanizing them because of overcrowding

This is one of the reasons I am HUGE on “personal rescue” / fostering. If I see someone who is trying to rehome or get rid of an animal and I have the space for that animal and all the funding for it, I will take it in until it gets adopted or there is space in rescues for it to go. I would never ever shit on open intake shelters, as those shelters have inspired me to become a foster / “rescue” to help these animals as well. But of course I only take the animals I can handle, some animals I just can’t help.

Yep. My city shelter has to accept all dogs even if they are at 120% plus full. They try so hard to avoid euthanasia.

If there were no breeders, “ethical” or otherwise, the shelters would be nearly empty. Purebreds end up in shelters all the time. I adopted a 9 week old “lab mix” that grew into a beautiful purebred Belgian Malinois. Even if a breeder has a buy back program, there is no guarantee people will use it, and there is definitely no guarantee that dog won’t impregnate/be impregnated by other dogs wether the owner meant it to happen or wether it was an accident. It’s especially common with show dogs, since they usually don’t get fixed. Where do you think those accidental litters end up? Shelters or sold off to byb/puppy mills. And just imagine how many more people would adopt if breeders weren’t an option. The ONLY ethical breeding is maybe for service dogs. And even then, many are adopted not bred.

since you seem to know a lot abt this system do you have a solution in mind to ease the burden of open intake shelters/enforce responsible breeding? it’s so sad to see so many lives created for our own purposes suffer 😞

if you're choosing to adopt, would adopting from open-intake in theory cause the most good?

So many poor babies are in this situation. Unfortunately it’s the fault of those who are irresponsible when getting an animal. I keep all my babies from the moment I get them to the end of their lives. Unless I’m in a dire situation, I can’t give them up

that's how I got my cat! the county I lived in was well over capacity and basically put out posts and ads on social media saying that they had a bunch of animals that needed to be adopted by the end of the week or they'd be euthanized. my childhood cat had passed from old age a month prior, so didn't feel ready for another cat and especially not a kitten. but it made me feel awful so I went anyways, and that's how I got my sweet girl! it's unfortunate but I understand why they have to do that

I’m not at a point in my life where I can have a dog, but both of my cats come from county shelters and they’re the best decisions I’ve ever made. One wasn’t in there long but was previously feral and the shelter said they weren’t going to be able to keep her long if she wasn’t adopted and the other was in the shelter for 4 months (her entire life) with a bunch of health issues from the shelter. Both are perfectly healthy and happy now!

This sounds WILD to me. Would definitely be illegal in my country to treat animals like that.
