for anyone wondering, they need to cut off the head of the patient suspected of rabies to check for the virus because it tends to move around the body and is difficult to find anywhere else in the nervous system

When I was a teenager, my kitten was showing signs if rabies and I had to have him put down. They made me take him in a Styrofoam cooler somewhere to have him tested. Worst experience

My dog found two BABY baby raccoons a few years ago in my yard and he picked one up or licked it or something, it was wet, and I told the animal control person and I thought they’d take them to a rescue but they told me at pick up that they had to test for rabies and I cried so hard. Then they tested negative and I cried harder because what was the point then.

The “rabies test” on my dog was quarantine and if he dies, it’s rabies, if he doesn’t, he’s fine. lol. He’s alive and kicking today ❤️

Which is exactly why even if you have an indoor ONLY cat, you should absolutely get them vaccinated. One bite could end up in a test being needed and you don't want that nor do we

We had a rabid fox in our yard when I was a kid, and we were forced to put every single one of our animals down to be tested. We had 2 mama cats, 14 kittens, 2 male cats, and 2 dogs…that was so traumatic and I have never let myself get too attached to animals since. 😭

I once took my dog in to the vet crying and BEGGING them to do a rabies test after she got in a fight with a raccoon…. Thank goodness they didn’t 😅 Didn’t know it wasn’t a blood test until years later

Loved when pet owners would come in for the dog grooming appointment without the vaccine. “Ok well if your dog bites me, the only way to test for it is obtaining a brain sample. Usually after the head is removed.” Of course I would only talk about this if the owner pushed back hard on taking the dog without a rabies vaccine and was being a complete jerk about it. It’s required in my state for dogs to have it.

my favorite thing while working in grooming was having the owners try to explain why it was okay for them to not vaccinate their animal (typically matted doodle) and then telling them that they were not allowed in my store [Red heart]

I brought my pet squirrel back in 2001 to school for my science project I found her after a tornado and my teacher kept telling me to let her out of her cage and I was like I have strict orders to not cause if she bites someone they’re gonna cut off her head lol
