Chucky Yeager and the Ghost of an Old Friend🇺🇸🙂🤜🏼🤛🏼😇🇺🇸 Chuck Yeager, an altitude record, and the ghost of Colonel Jack Ridley. December 10, 1963. Col. Chuck Yeager strapped into a rocket-assisted NF-104A at Edwards Air Force Base and went after the Soviet-held world altitude record of 113,892 feet. Sixteen years earlier, Yeager had become the first man to officially break the sound barrier in the Bell X-1. Beside him in those early days were fellow test pilot Bob Hoover and Col. Jack Ridley - the brilliant engineer, test pilot and friend Yeager trusted. Colonel Jackie Linwood "Jack" Ridley died at age 41 on March 12, 1957, when the U.S. Air Force C-47 transport plane he was aboard crashed into snow-covered Mount Shirouma, northwest of Tokyo, Japan. Before that historic X-1 flight, there was a simple ritual between Yeager and Ridley: "You got any Beemans?" Sixteen years later, Ridley was there again as Yeager prepared to take the NF-104 above 100,000 feet. Except Colonel Ridley had been dead for more than six years. Ridley was killed in a C-47 crash in Japan in 1957. It was a liberty with history that brought Yeager's old world into the new - the spirit of his late friend there for one more send-off. One more stick of Beemans. Yeager climbed above 100,000 feet before the NF-104 departed controlled flight. He ultimately ejected and survived. The Soviet record remained unbroken. The airplane changed. The mission changed. The world had changed. But for a moment, the old team was together again. The Lockheed NF-104A was an American mixed-power, high-performance, supersonic aerospace trainer that served as a low-cost astronaut training vehicle for the North American X-15 and projected Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar programs. Three aircraft were modified from existing Lockheed F-104A Starfighter airframes, and served with the Aerospace Research Pilots School between 1963 and 1971, During the test program, the maximum altitude reached was more than 120,000 ft (36,600 m). The third NF-104A (USAF 56-0762) was delivered to the USAF on 1 November 1963, and was destroyed in a crash while being piloted by Chuck Yeager on 10 December 1963. This accident was depicted in the book Yeager: An Autobiography, and the book and movie adaptation of The Right Stuff. Credit: The Right Stuff (1983) | The Ladd Company / Warner Bros.
