Brawlhalla is genuinely one of the most demoralising games ever created, because it somehow manages to make you feel personally betrayed by your own fingers. You can spend three hours practising a combo, watching tutorials, learning movement, improving your dodges, and convincing yourself that this is finally the match where you become unstoppable—only to get launched off the map by someone named “xX_DemonSlayer_420_Xx” who has apparently dedicated their entire existence to pressing the same button. The game will have you at 2–0, feeling confident, thinking, “Yeah, I’ve got this,” and then suddenly your opponent discovers a mysterious ancient technique called spamming, and your character is now travelling at approximately the speed of a NASA rocket directly into the blast zone. What makes it worse is that every loss feels completely personal. You miss one attack by approximately 0.0004 millimetres and Brawlhalla responds as if you have committed a federal crime, giving your opponent enough time to perform a 17-hit combo, write a university thesis, eat dinner, and still somehow recover before you touch the ground. Then there are the weapons: some attacks feel like they have the range of a fishing rod, while your opponent’s weapon apparently has the reach of the Great Wall of China. You swear you dodged, but the game calmly informs you that, actually, you did not, and your character is going to spend the next five seconds being beaten like a piñata at a birthday party. And the most painful part? You always say, “One more game.” One game becomes three, three becomes ten, and suddenly it is 1:47 a.m. and you’re sitting there staring at the defeat screen questioning every decision that led you to this moment. Brawlhalla doesn’t simply test your skill—it tests your patience, your emotional stability, your relationship with technology, and potentially your willingness to remain a functioning member of society. Yet somehow, despite all of this psychological warfare, you immediately press Play Again, because apparently suffering is part of the gameplay loop.
