@ocdbrian: You're on the bus home and your body is doing absolutely nothing. Hands on your knees. Face blank. Anyone looking at you would guess you're tired, maybe a little bored. Meanwhile you are forty minutes deep into one sentence you said at work. Not a big sentence. Eight words, maybe. But you're running it again, checking the tone, checking how your face looked when you said it, checking whether the pause before it meant something. Because the fear isn't really about the sentence. It's that the sentence leaked something. That it showed people what you actually are. Here's the cruel mechanic. Memory isn't a recording. Every time you pull it up, you're rebuilding it, slightly differently. So the harder you check, the less reliable it gets. You are looking for certainty in the one place that produces less of it every time you visit. And this counts as compulsion, even though nothing moved. No hand washing. No light switch. Just a person on a bus, missing their stop. (Which is why so many people go years without knowing what this is. It doesn't look like anything.) PS — if your commute is mostly a courtroom: Choiceful is the treatment app I'd send a friend to for OCD. A 100% personalized course built around what you're actually dealing with, therapy chat 24/7, and users seeing clinically significant improvement in their symptoms. You're still a good human. #MentalHealth #mentalillness #psychology #ocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #anxiety
