This common cellulitis mimic results from chronic venous insufficiency and can lead to unnecessary antibiotic treatment when misdiagnosed. 🚨 HIGH-YIELD CLINICAL CLUES: • Morphology:Scaly, eczematous patches or plaques, often around the lower legs and ankles. • Venous changes: Dependent edema, varicosities, and rusty-brown hemosiderin staining. • Distribution:Usually bilateral and chronic, although unilateral disease can occur. • Skin of color: Inflammation may appear brown, violaceous, or hyperpigmented rather than bright red. • Symptoms:Itching and scaling favor stasis dermatitis; acute tenderness, warmth, and rapid progression raise concern for cellulitis. ⚠️ DON'T MISS: Cellulitis can coexist with venous disease.
