Ngl piccolo’s statement did irreparable damage to Goku’s reputation. A lot of people forget that Gohan tells us exactly what he’s thinking, he says he knows exactly why Goku sent him against cell and knows he’s the only one strong enough to beat cell

I love that you point out the connection between 8 and 16! They are connected. 8 teaches goku at a pivotal point that killing is not always the answer while 16 is the inverse saying sometimes you need to do what is necessary (violence) for the greater good! Toriyama is the goat

You’re right! That’s not what Gohan is thinking, plenty of people interpret this chapter as Goku being a bad father but Gohan himself said he understood now why HE had to go fight, because he’s the only one that could do it! And nobody knew Gohan better than his own father, especially after the year in the time chamber together!

Piccolo's speech is definitely incorrect. Toriyama made a point of showing a panel where Gohan says he knew his father's plan, which refutes Piccolo's statement. Goku was wrong, yes, but he erred in not telling Gohan the plan. That part was about misunderstanding and frustrated expectations. The only one who understood Gohan was Android 16, someone with the same nature as him: calm and serene.
