Your cervical mucus is giving you far more information than just “I’m fertile today.” When I’m taking a fertility history, cervical mucus is one of the physiological clues I’m interested in because it reflects some of the hormonal changes happening across the menstrual cycle. As a dominant follicle develops, it produces increasing amounts of oestradiol. That rising oestradiol acts on the cervix and changes both the quantity and characteristics of cervical mucus. Around the fertile window, you may notice it becoming: • more hydrated • slippery • stretchy • similar to raw egg white And those changes have a purpose. Fertile cervical mucus creates an environment that helps support sperm survival and movement through the female reproductive tract. Then after ovulation, as progesterone becomes dominant, cervical mucus typically becomes thicker and less permeable. So when I’m assessing fertility, I want to know: Does fertile mucus appear? When does it appear? How long does it last? And does that pattern make sense alongside the rest of your cycle? Cervical mucus alone cannot confirm ovulation or tell us your hormone levels. But alongside temperature tracking, ovulation testing, blood tests, cycle history and symptoms, it gives us another useful piece of the puzzle. This is why fertility assessment should be about the whole picture, not one app, one test or one positive ovulation strip. If you’re trying to conceive and want help understanding what your cycle is actually telling you, our fertility naturopaths Mel and Danielle consult Australia-wide via Zoom through Nourishing Apothecary.
