"Can I get that as a bullet?" Sysadmin: *racks slide* "I thought you'd never ask."

I worked for a guy who wanted updates every 5 minutes from the engineers. As the Product Manager I said No, I'm going to trust the Engineers to do their jobs and update me when they are done. He said no, he wants updates every 5 minutes. I said I'm not going to harass the engineers while they are working on an incident. He said if I won't, he will. I said, I won't.

this is why PO and Scrum masters should have a technical aspect to the role, i was a dev, now im a PO and my team love that i understand the way stuff works and can field the business without bothering the team

when this happens to me, my mind thinks "the more you talk to me the longer the ETA is."... I say it out loud if it's a company level problem. 😅

O god I feel this so bad. We were asked why our department closed tickets so fast after an outage. Our hero was the intern. He wore our badges and took all the meetings durring outages freeing us to do our work and get services up quickly. 😊

When I did incident management - fortunately I was in control of the chat groups for said outage. I muted anyone who behaved like this. Management also hated my after action reports because root causes were never “we don’t know the cause” it was always “sales-doofus decided to send this code he found on the internet and this was the result. Do not ever do that again. Manger, please educate your employee on proper cyber security protocol. I have another outage to fix”

I once asked a manager during an outage, “would you like me to spend 20 min talking about the issue or 10 fixing it?”

If this regularly happens, get a chess clock app. Run one timer when you're working in the page, then switch to the other timer when you're dealing with management. That way when you're writing the incident report, you can put an actual number to how much time management added to the outage duration with their stupid questions.

I used to say on the conf call, do you want updates or do you want me to actually work on identifying and fix the problem, that used to shut them up for a while.

Yeah, in incident command we have a dedicated PIO for this reason. At work we have a scribe dedicated to documenting what's happening and copying things said on the call (or in the room if applicable) to the chat. more dev teams should take ICS100,200,300,400 and apply it.

Not me recalling a time the database (technically, the servers) was on fire... literally 🔥. Building maintenance "hot wired" a vacuum cleaner into a restricted power source. Good times. Good times. 🤣

I have honed the skill to let the tech team tech and feed me updates. I then interface with everyone else and if they dare approach the tech team I become a feral hell hound. plus I have to document the event so I need to be in the flow.
