@thebeautydoctrine: 💧 What if your dry skin needs more than another moisturizer? We spend so much time trying to moisturize skin from the outside that we forget something fundamental: Your skin is being built from the inside. Topical moisturizers absolutely matter. They can increase hydration and reduce water loss from the skin. But if your skin remains persistently dry despite using richer and richer creams, I also want to know what you are feeding it. Lipids are essential components of healthy skin, and dietary fatty acids can influence skin barrier function and inflammatory signaling. This is where omega-3 fatty acids become interesting. EPA and DHA are incorporated into cell membrane phospholipids and participate in the production of lipid mediators involved in inflammatory and immune signaling. And we have human data showing that dietary fatty acids can influence measurable skin parameters. In two randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled pilot studies, adults supplementing with krill oil for 12 weeks experienced significant improvements compared with placebo in: 💧 Skin hydration
🛡️ Transepidermal water loss
✨ Skin elasticity The improvements also correlated with increases in the participants’ omega-3 index. Another randomized double blind study in women with sensitive skin found that supplementation with omega-3-rich flaxseed oil significantly increased hydration while decreasing transepidermal water loss, roughness, scaling, and skin sensitivity. That does NOT mean omega-3 replaces your moisturizer. It means dry skin deserves a bigger conversation than: “Which heavier cream should I buy?” Look at your barrier. Look at your diet. Look at your essential fats. And then support the skin from both directions. This is why omega-3 is foundational in my Functional Beauty approach before I start talking about all the sexy longevity supplements. Moisturize from the outside. Nourish from the inside. Beauty is health. ✨ SCIENTIFIC REFERENCES: Handeland K, Wakeman M, Burri L. I just want to say I feel so lost on my skincare journey. I struggled with acne when I was younger and then had more or less clear skin for most of my adulthood. In recent years I started struggling with congestion. I was trying the Korean skincare, adapalene and Azalaeic acid route, all the things. I learned from your approach and tried out your beginner or lowest cost routine and really liked some of the products but not all of them. Anyway I’m leaning towards diving into your approach again because it resonates with me. Wishing me luck and when I have the budget for it I’ll look into these. Your skin is really impressive.
