@ironandspirit: This feast exists because of a naval battle. On October 7, 1571, a small Christian fleet faced the entire Ottoman Empire at Lepanto in the Gulf of Corinth. They were significantly outnumbered. Pope Pius V called on Catholics across Europe to pray the Rosary. The Christian fleet won. Pius V attributed the victory directly to Our Lady of the Rosary and established this feast to mark the date. The Church has observed it every October 7 since. October became the month of the Rosary. The feast is not a religious formality. It is a memorial to the day a naval battle turned on prayer.
