Does this guy know that humans don’t eat 99% of the corn in fields? We honestly eat more soybeans.

Soybeans bring more money per bushel, and require less fertilizer and herbicide. Also the planter used to plant soybeans is cheaper and smaller than a corn plant.

As if all plants don’t remove nutrients from the ground.

I’ve taught history, politics, economics, and natural sciences. This is a good visual example of what he’s referring to. The native species help stabilize the soil. Non native species don’t have the root systems to do it. This opening biggest causes of the Dust Bowl. They removed all the native grass so the soil had. Nothing to hold it in place. Then came a huge drought which was partially caused by destroying the ecosystem. So soil blew everywhere in blizzards of dirt and sand bad enough to kill livestock. This is why native species are so important.

Even where guys are a 50/50 rotation it still takes a whole lot of nitrogen to grow a decent corn crop. Have you ever seen a corn crop? It’s pretty tall and the root system is even more massive. Similar to that tall grass you described. What would you prefer people do? Just let their $20-30k per acre land just grow up in grass for you to look at??

I thought he was going to talk about the dust bowl and how when we plowed up all the ancient Prairie grass it took all the topsoil out and we ruined the environment. I planting things like wheat and corn and crops like that for farmland and it took us decades to figure out how to fix it and even then it’s still never going to be back to what it was.

Sorry but that’s not how this works. Corn returns a percentage of the nitrogen it takes to grow back to the soil. Soybeans actually need nitrogen as well just not as much because they do make their own. In Iowa I believe they use manure heavily which is why ground goes so high out there, it’s not just the want for land but also the need for livestock operations to get rid of their manure without turning the soil “hot” because of too high fertility levels. Farmer have actually reduced their synthetic nitrogen use by quite a bit in the last 30-40 years

they've been applying nitrogen for many years. but you're right about the rotation.

Local's call it go for gas. Technical terminology is anhydrous pneumonia.. you've probably seen it been pulled down. Down The Road looks like big propane tanks. You have sitting outside of your house if your house is heated with LP. If you ever seen one of those leaking or being pulled down the road and it's leaking try and get the attention of the farmer. If not call 911 immediately there are relief valves in them so don't freak out completely, but do not go by that plumb of gas. One little breath will literally kill you. It is pretty crazy stuff.

Corn is only more profitable if you live within delivery distance of an ethanol plant...... us farmers who live too far away of these plants to make deliveries economical, well we stick with corn soybean rotations, maybe some alfalfa and clover here and there oats but mostly corn soybeans.... and soybeans work well for biodiesel... but same problem there you get to live within economical delivery distance of plant that makes bio diesel.

our forefathers knew better ways to sustain than companies. same as rotating alfalfa in the mix. that rotation also makes it easier for them to know exactly where the yearly wild meat harvest was going to be. and took care of cattle
