@_girllockin: As a first-generation wealth builder, I finally feel like I’ve created a foundation for myself. I’ve paid off debt. I’m investing. I’m building savings. I’m thinking about retirement. I’m creating a financial foundation I didn’t grow up with. And yet… there’s still this little voice in the back of my mind telling me that something could go wrong. That I need to save more. Invest more. Have a bigger emergency fund. Reach the next milestone. I’m not sure what number will convince my brain that it’s finally okay to rest. Because maybe the hardest part of building wealth isn’t learning how to make money… Maybe it’s learning how to feel safe once you finally have some. I’m still working on that part. #FirstGenerationWealth #WealthBuilding #GenerationalWealth #BuildingWealth #PersonalFinance
You have to start therapy.. I had to start again, it’s a trauma response but I had to learn to calm down & take a deep breath. 🙏🏽❤️Good luck to you!

i’m the same way 🥲 i spent years staying disciplined & budgeting to reach some big savings & investing goals. i *briefly* acknowledged my accomplishments, then immediately started wondering how i could do more, thinking an emergency might happen that’s more costly than my current emergency fund 😕

This is relatable and I’m going to be honest… I think growing up in the Black church hasn’t helped because that conditioned me to expect “tribulation” around the corner. It’s like we’re always expecting the need to be “delivered” from financial lack.

It won’t be a number boo. I agree with the comment above, this is a trauma response. Ramit Sethi Money For Couples podcast tells his guests all the time a number won’t make you feel better because once you reach it then you will extend the goal again. I will say I understand the struggle. I do think setbacks come with life even outside of financials.

I notice you are a planner. Plan your doubt (factor of safety) into your monthly budget. Fluctuating utility bills can break a system built too tight. As far as overall wealth and retirement, look into Monte Carlo. It may give you some insight.

Yeah, no number will fix us. Being black and especially being a black woman never feels safe. I’m in prayer about it.

Yes it’s a daily battle. I would look to see if there are any Financial Social Workers near you that can help you navigate a healthy mental path. I just found this area existed when I was looking for local financial conferences to attend!

Maybe try some somatic or EMDR therapy. You need to unlearn and relearn new patterns. The goal post will always move but you deserve to feel safe. It’s inevitable that things will go wrong because that’s life, but you have the foundation to right those wrongs! Definitely try something that heals your nervous system!

I felt the same way for a long time. One thing that helped me is vocalizing the plan, like “I’m worried about something going wrong, but I have a plan, so I’m going to run the numbers, and not check again until next week.” It can help your brain stop the loop if you practice it enough.
