One of the first places women notice menopause is in their skin—especially around the eyes. As estrogen declines, transepidermal water loss increases, which basically means your skin has a harder time holding onto water. You can be drinking tons of water and still feel like your face is constantly dry and dehydrated. That’s why so many moisturizers and creams are focused on recreating and strengthening the skin barrier. But it’s not just dryness. As collagen declines, we start to see more laxity and changes in the structure of the face. Depending on your facial anatomy and skin type, that can show up as volume loss through the mid-face, deeper nasolabial folds, changes around the marionette lines, and looser skin. Some women also notice more hollowing around the eyes. These are some of the most common changes menopausal women are coming in wanting to treat—not necessarily because they want to look younger, but because suddenly the face looking back at them can feel very different from the one they’re used to seeing.
