We stayed quiet because we were trying to grieve in peace, but there comes a point where silence starts protecting the wrong person. Our family recently experienced the unimaginable loss of our daughter. When we met the owner of this home, we never told her what happened. She searched us online, discovered it herself, brought it up to us, cried with us, spoke about God, prayed with us and told us what happened was a tragic accident and that we shouldn’t blame ourselves. At one of the most vulnerable moments of our lives, she made us feel like she genuinely cared. We trusted her. We were grieving, exhausted and trying to find somewhere peaceful for our family to breathe. We paid nearly $20,000 to move into this home. Because of what we were dealing with emotionally, we were told we could continue our walkthrough after moving in and point out things as we noticed them so they could be addressed. Then we started actually living here. Within weeks, we began discovering bugs, deteriorating conditions, windows that would not properly open and other safety concerns, especially with our children living here. Instead of simply addressing our concerns, we were blamed and accused of causing damage, including causing windows not to open, which we completely dispute. Our concern was simple: what happens if there’s a fire and our children need those windows to escape? This wasn’t about being picky. This was about our children’s safety. Under normal circumstances, we would have never knowingly moved our family into a home with the conditions we later discovered. But these weren’t normal circumstances. We were grieving our daughter and trying to survive one day at a time. That’s why we feel our vulnerability and trust were taken advantage of. But the condition of the house isn’t even what hurts the most. The same person who initially cried with us about our daughter, prayed with us, spoke about God and comforted us later began bringing our family’s tragedy into a dispute about the property. That crossed a line. Landlords and tenants can disagree about repairs, money, responsibility or the condition of a property. But our daughter should NEVER be part of that disagreement. After everything our family has endured, hearing comments involving what happened to our daughter and words that left us feeling as though another tragedy involving our children was being invoked is something I cannot adequately describe. You can disagree with us. You can dispute the repairs. You can tell us to move. But you do not take the most devastating thing that has ever happened to a family and throw it back in their faces because they’re asking for concerns about their home to be addressed. We weren’t asking to live anywhere for free. We paid nearly $20,000 to move in. We expected legitimate concerns to be taken seriously and our children’s safety to matter. We have photographs, videos, messages and communications documenting what we experienced and the concerns we reported. We’re not asking anyone to harass or attack anybody. We’re sharing our experience and documentation so people can hear the words and form their own conclusions. We came here looking for somewhere to heal and somewhere our children could feel safe. Instead, we’re leaving feeling like our vulnerability and trust were taken advantage of during the lowest moment of our lives. Now we’re preparing to go back home. We’ll keep protecting our children, documenting everything and handling the property issues through the proper channels. Our daughter is not a weapon. Our grief is not something to manipulate.
