A prosecutor in South Carolina today cross-examined the son of a gas station owner about how his father shot and killed a 14-year-old shoplifting suspect. Andy Chow, 23, testified he backed away after Cyrus Carmack-Belton pointed a gun at him after running from the Shell gas station and convenience store Chow's parents owned in Columbia on May 28, 2023. Chow's father, Rick Chow, has been in jail since his arrest one day after the shooting. He and his son chased the boy after accusing him of stealing bottled water, which he had not done. Prosecutors say Cyrus never displayed his 9 mm gun before Chow shot him in his back after he fell down while running from the store. He lost one shoe while he was sprinting, which Rick Chow's wife picked up and took to the store before police could photograph where it landed as evidence.

He lost one shoe while he was sprinting, which Rick Chow's wife picked up and took to the store before police could photograph where it landed as evidence. "So you watched a 14-year-old boy with one shoe, who you suspected of stealing $1 of water trip and fall, and you didn't just turn around and say, 'Dad, let's call it a day. Let's just go back. We've done too much already.' You didn't do that?" asked Dale Scott, a senior assistant solicitor in South Carolina's Fifth Circuit. "I did not do that," Chow answered. "You still didn't notice he was only wearing one shoe?" Scott asked. "No, sir," Chow answered. "He busted his butt pretty bad there, didn't he?" Scott asked. "His butt?" Chow said. "He busted his shins up, right? I mean, he was down, like, on his stomach, right?" Scott asked. "He was on his — he was flat, and I saw something in his hand," Chow answered. You can watch the entire cross-exam on my YouTube channel. Prosecutors and the defense rested today. Rick Chow did not testify. Jurors will hear closing arguments on Monday (June 1). #law #crime #court #guns
