School spirit can be quiet (stocking the food pantry for our vulnerable families) or loud (school apparel and bellowing the fight song) both are equally valuable to community and culture. As someone who doesn’t do pajama day or anything but a cup day (still rocking a tie on those days) the kids respect my authenticity and know I’m appreciative of their version of spirit. However, the anti-spirit folks who are neither loud nor quiet, are just problematic when they complain to kids or other staff when they claim spirit days are unnecessary. You’re spot on with the importance of these days for community and culture 💯

I was a band director for over 20 years, and for a while I did do school spirit honestly, but the zeal was taken from me by increasingly hostile 1) admin, 2) parents, 3) students, and 4) community members. I had a rando ask me why the band was so bad. I was rebuilding the program. Didn’t need that. Left teaching and never looked back. Many teachers who don’t do school spirit may be scarred.

My students showed up every day in high school. They skipped other classes, but not mine. I don’t do dress up days…I told students I do consistent days. Each day is already spirited bc we are here together. ‘Nuff said

Ok but if "school spirit" means 20 costume days a year I don't have it either. As a kid I hated the obligation. Hated the work, but hated being left out. Dressing up over and over sucks

I’ve only got a few years left in the profession. From 23 - 45 I coached. Sometimes multiple sports. I fundraiser, I took kids to Mexico, New Orleans, food pantries, homeless shelters, did food drops. At 46 I stopped. Now I arrive at 7:15, hang out with my middle schoolers and 10th graders, then go home at 3:30. I still take relationships and my curriculum seriously, but for me the rest of it was unsustainable

My whole life doesnt involve around by job. Being a teacher is a job ,if we are paid twice as much maybe I would feel more inclined, but why does everything falls on teachers? Also people are different, i like my co-workers that have a school spirit mindset, but I cant have the whole world on my shoulders and try to teach kids about everything/all the time. Teachers are more than their job, we are human.
